Ex-STF Sniper Denied Bail For Murder Of Madlanga Commission Whistleblower

BRAKPAN — The Brakpan Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to former SAPS Special Task Force officer Matipandile “Andy” Sotheni, who is accused of murdering Madlanga Commission whistleblower Marius van der Merwe.

Sotheni faces 16 criminal charges, including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder.

The court ruled that the state has a powerful case against the former elite sniper, who is considered a severe flight risk and a threat to witness safety.

Van der Merwe, known as “Witness D,” was gunned down in his driveway in December 2025 after implicating senior Ekurhuleni metro police officials in corruption.

Sotheni denies all charges and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 30 July 2026.
