High court grants r4.4 million forfeiture order against illegal chrome mining assets in Limpopo

POLOKWANE, LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Division of the High Court has granted a major forfeiture order valued at nearly R4.5 million against vehicles and machinery used in syndicates targeting illegal chrome mining.

The asset seizure order was finalized on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. The asset freeze follows multi-year, multi-disciplinary investigations led by the Limpopo Priority Crime Specialised Investigation (PCSI) and the Asset Forfeiture Investigation (AFI) teams. The targeted probe focused on widespread illicit chrome extraction networks operating across the Sekhukhune District between 2024 and 2025.

The high court order permits the state to permanently seize heavy transport fleet vehicles and support transport caught during field operations. The total valuation of the forfeited property stands at R4,489,490.00 and consists of:

  • Seven commercial cargo trucks
  • Two transport trailers
  • One Toyota Hilux utility bakkie
  • One Nissan NP300 utility bakkie

The asset forfeitures stem from field operations driven by the ongoing law enforcement initiative, Operation Vala Umgodi. Tactical deployments across known hot spots—including Burgersfort, Mecklenburg, Driekop, and Malipsdrift—initially intercepted the vehicles while they were actively moving raw chrome.

The multi-agency clampdown has additionally resulted in the criminal arrest of more than 20 suspects. The individuals face various statutory charges tied directly to illicit mining operations, environmental damage, and commodity theft.

Major General Adv Gobz Govender, Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) in Limpopo, lauded the judicial victory. Govender stated that the forfeiture serves as a critical milestone in systematically crippling the financial infrastructure of illicit mining operations by permanently stripping syndicates of the expensive logistical equipment required to move stolen commodities.
