Police stand firm on Sibanyoni case despite setback

KWAGGAFONTEIN — Mpumalanga police maintain they hold a strong case against prominent taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and three co-accused, despite the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court striking the matter off the roll on Tuesday [19 May 2026].

The court dismissed the case following the failure of prosecutor Mkhuseli Ntaba to appear in court as ordered.

Sibanyoni, alongside co-accused Oupa Sindane, Phillimon Msiza, and Daniel Masilela, faced charges of extortion and money laundering.

On Friday, Ntaba notified the court that prior commitments would prevent his attendance on Monday. The Magistrate subsequently ordered both Ntaba and the investigating officer to appear.

Following Ntaba’s failure to appear, defence attorneys applied to have the matter struck off the roll due to the ongoing delays.

The defence further requested that the court find Ntaba guilty of contempt of court, citing penalties of either a fine or imprisonment.
