Pirates draw to give Sundowns hope

The Betway Premiership title race is set for a dramatic final-day climax after Orlando Pirates squandered an opportunity to close in on dethroning Mamelodi Sundowns. Needing a victory against Durban City to boost their hopes of a first league title in 14 years, the Buccaneers were instead held to a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium. Pirates now trail the Brazilians by two points and must defeat Orbit College next weekend to stop Sundowns from retaining their crown.

Elsewhere, ten-man Kaizer Chiefs secured consecutive victories with a 1-0 win over AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Glody Lilepo netted the match-winner in the 68th minute but was promptly sent off after receiving a second yellow card for removing his jersey in celebration. The win puts Amakhosi 10 points ahead of Usuthu, who remain locked in a tight battle for fourth place with Sekhukhune United. Babina Noko maintained pressure on Arthur Zwane’s side by fighting back for a 1-1 draw against Richards Bay, courtesy of a 76th-minute equaliser from Bradley Mojela.

In the top-eight race, Golden Arrows and Polokwane City mathematically booked their spots in next season’s MTN8 tournament. Arrows defeated relegation-threatened Chippa United 2-0, while Polokwane City fought back to draw 1-1 with Marumo Gallants to reach the 40-point mark. Meanwhile, Stellenbosch kept their own MTN8 qualification hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Orbit College, leaving them three points behind eighth-placed Durban City. At the bottom of the log, Siwelele secured a crucial 1-0 win over Magesi, a result that leaves Dikwena tsa Meetse rooted to the foot of the table and facing imminent relegation.
