Stellies boost top eight hopes with win over Orbit
Chumani Butsaka brace propelled Stellenbosch FC back into the MTN8 qualification conversation following a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Orbit College at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday.
The crucial home win snapped a four-match winless run for the Maroons, elevating them to ninth on the Betway Premiership standings. They now trail eighth-placed Durban City by three points. Conversely, the defeat brought an end to Orbit College’s three-match unbeaten streak, keeping the Mswenko Boys anchored in 15th position—the dreaded relegation playoff spot.
Stellenbosch engineered the perfect start by opening the scoring inside the opening four minutes. A fluid attacking sequence culminated in Devin Titus driving a low cross into the box, allowing Butsaka to deftly sidefoot home a left-footed opener.
The hosts continued to assert dominance and nearly doubled their cushion ahead of the half-hour mark. Lengelihle Phili’s deflected cross found Tshegofatso Mabasa, whose goalward header was cleanly gathered by Orbit goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane. The aerial challenge resulted in a severe clash of heads, forcing Orbit midfielder Given Thibedi to be stretchered off. He was replaced by 43-year-old Atisang Batsi, who further extended his historic record as the oldest outfield player in Premier Soccer League (PSL) history.
Orbit College fought back and created dangerous opportunities on either side of the halftime whistle. Deep into first-half injury time, a dangerous corner kick flashed agonizingly wide of the near post. Ten minutes into the second stanza, Gomolemo Khoto looked set to equalise from a wide free-kick, but Stellies shot-stopper Oscarine Masuluke reacted quickly to tip the goalbound effort over the crossbar.
The home side effectively sealed the maximum points in the 67th minute. Kazie Enyinnaya delivered an accurate cross from the right wing to find an arriving Butsaka, who hit a clinical right-footed shot into the bottom corner to secure his brace. Butsaka missed a golden opportunity to claim a hat-trick in the 85th minute, blazing the ball over the bar from close range after Moerane spilled a long-range effort.
The final moments of the encounter provided an emotional highlight for the home crowd. Veteran Stellenbosch goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt, who recently announced his retirement from professional football, was introduced as a 92nd-minute substitute. Langeveldt signed off his career in spectacular fashion, producing a brilliant reflex save just before the referee’s final whistle to preserve the clean sheet.
Both teams will wrap up their respective Betway Premiership campaigns on Saturday, 23 May. Stellenbosch will travel to face Marumo Gallants, while Orbit College faces a daunting home assignment against title-chasing Orlando Pirates.
